Today I’m going to be sharing a little poem I wrote, inspired by a page from Jennae Ceceila’s book Deep In My Feels…
I met my younger self for coffee.
She was 15 minutes early;
I was just on time.
I wore my dark brown hair down, with a part to the side.
Her hair was greasy, in a thick braid behind.
I had a floral dress on, as I so often do.
She had her chef pants on, covered with flour.
She hangs her head low, looking like she’s about to break.
I tell her to release her feelings, one at a time,
But she’s too afraid.
My heart breaks as I know for the next few years, things will only get worse.
She wouldn’t think that’s possible with all the scars she’s already obtained.
As I look at myself now, I see the scars on her have faded.
I want to tell her that things won’t always be like this, and one day she will have hope again,
But I don’t.
She doesn’t need to hear that things will be better.
She just needs someone to love her and have her feelings validated during this uncertain season, mixed with fear.
We leave the aroma of the coffee shop and our pastries behind.
I walk her to her car, silently praying to the Lord to show her where He is.
We won’t meet again for another five years now,
But so very often, she’ll think of the woman she needed, the one who acknowledged her pain.
If you could go back five years what would you have said or not said to your younger self?
Many Blessings, Grace. Xx
