“Well, clearly you don’t want it badly enough. That’s why it hasn’t happened yet.”
…That was the response I received after sharing a dream that was close to my heart.
This comment hurt, but more than that, it revealed something about the hustle culture we live in…
There’s a difference between obedience and striving. And I believe that the longer we walk with God, the more we learn that we can do everything right and still have to wait.
The reality is that God is in control, not your effort nor mine.
Yes, sometimes God is waiting for us to take a step before He opens a door.
But perhaps sometimes doors remain closed simply because it isn’t time and being told to “just want it more” or “work harder” ignores the reality that faith isn’t about white-knuckling your way into God’s will but rather is about surrender.
Think about it… Hebrews 11 tells us that Abraham was willing to place Isaac on the altar because he believed God was faithful enough to raise him from the dead.
The very son God had promised.
The very dream God had fulfilled.
Yet Abraham trusted God enough to surrender his own son regardless.
…I personally want my dreams to come true.
But what I want even more is for God to use me as He sees fit and for His will to be done, not mine.
And if trusting God looks like waiting instead of striving.
Or surrendering something I love so deeply it feels like dying, then I’ll continue to wait…
Even when I’m misunderstood.
Even when it’s frustrating.
Even when I’m labelled as lazy.
Even when it pokes at my pride.
Because if I’ve learned anything, it’s this:
If something is truly part of God’s will for my life, I won’t have to manipulate, force or strive to obtain it.
And sometimes, the most beautiful dreams are the ones I never would have chosen but cannot imagine living without once they arrive.
So, here’s to living from a place of surrender, trusting that His plan truly is better than anything I could have written for myself…
“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” – John 12:24
