When Temporary Fixes Aren’t Enough

Have you ever noticed those deep desires we carry, the kind that don’t really go away? Longings for peace, acceptance, purpose and meaning. They tend to rise to the surface when things don’t go ‘our way’ and we’re left disappointed, confused, or searching.

In John 4:13-14 Jesus meets a woman who says to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.”

This moment is rich in significance.  Culturally, it was unusual, even scandalous for a Jewish man to speak publicly with a Samaritan woman. But Jesus never followed the world’s norms. He meets people exactly where they are, even if it means crossing boundaries and breaking expectations.

This speaks volumes about His character.  Jesus isn’t distant or disinterested. He’s near, personal, intentional and often shows up in our lives through ordinary moments, offering something far deeper than physical water.

At first, the woman in this passage doesn’t fully grasp what He’s offering. She thinks He’s talking about actual water.  But Jesus is speaking of something eternal, living water, the kind that quenches the thirst of our soul.

This is what Jesus offers us too, not temporary relief but a long-lasting satisfaction the world simply can’t provide.  A peace that doesn’t fade, a joy that holds steady and a purpose that remains even when life doesn’t go to plan.

And yet — if we’re honest — how often do we still chase quick fixes?

Maybe because it feels easier or less painful in the moment.  It might seem easier in the moment but in the long run it never truly satisfies.

I know how tempting it is to fill those voids temporarily.  But real, lasting fulfillment takes intentionality.  It requires quiet time with Jesus, fasting, being in the Word and opening our hearts to hear His voice above the noise.

This is the beauty of the gospel… just like in this passage, Jesus knows everything about us and still chooses us.

He sees the parts we try to hide, our fears, our secrets, our shame.  And still, He extends love, forgiveness and healing.

That’s grace, not just the absence of judgment but the presence of strength. The strength to walk through hard things and to trust when we don’t understand.  To believe that He is enough!

So, here’s the invitation for us, to daily humble ourselves, bringing all our fears, anxieties, doubts and dreams to Him.  Because Jesus isn’t just willing, He’s waiting for both you and me!

Many blessings, Grace. Xx

  6. What a beautiful and timely reminder of the depth of Jesus’ love and the true fulfillment only He can offer. Your words resonate deeply because they touch on those universal longings we all carry—the ache for something more, something lasting, something that doesn’t fade when life gets hard.

I love how you highlighted the radical nature of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman. It’s so powerful to remember that He doesn’t just meet us in our “presentable” moments but in our mess, our questions, and even our misunderstandings. Like the woman at the well, I’ve often found myself looking for temporary solutions, thinking, If only this thing worked out, then I’d be satisfied. But time and again, Jesus gently redirects me, showing me that He Himself is the Living Water—the only source that doesn’t run dry.

Your point about intentionality really struck me. It’s so true—our world is full of noise, distractions, and quick fixes, but real peace comes from slowing down, opening His Word, and letting Him speak into our hearts. And the most comforting truth? He already knows everything about us—the hidden fears, the regrets, the unspoken prayers—and He still chooses us. That kind of love changes everything.

Thank you for this heartfelt reflection. It’s a call to stop striving and start drinking deeply from the only well that satisfies. May we all respond to His invitation with open hands and hearts, trusting that He is more than enough.

Many blessings to you as well. 💛

  13. Yes. He is my living water, and yours as well. I feel somedays like he is poured out from Heaven like an immense and glorious waterfall! I have seen this in a dream and I am drowning in His glory. And yet somedays i walk down to a tiny stream and lap like a dog for a bit of life- giving water. Who is making this choice? And how can I choose to stand beneath the waterfall of Life every day?

    1. He really is our living water. 🤍

  17. I tend to be too literal and immediately see people drinking from some spiritual stream as if the drinking somehow becomes spiritual insight. I then have to rewind and consider what was actually meant. I find this is more a constant evaluation of life vs what we have read from the Bible, and the water represents the constant internalising of God’s Word. This ‘drinking’ will allow me to better embrace the teachings of Jesus on a continual basis. I’m still embracing, “Blessed are the poor in spirit …” so there is still a way to go.

    1. Yes, our walk with Christ is definitely a journey. 🥰
