The True Definition Of Beauty

Today, I want to talk about beauty, specifically, what I believe God’s definition of beauty is.

📖 Psalm 139:13–14 says:
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

This post was inspired by my trips to Africa.

While there, I was struck by how many of the women I met carried themselves with such confidence, a kind that felt deeply rooted and unshaken. Of course, comparison exists everywhere but it felt less suffocating than what I often see (and experience) in the Western world.

What stood out most was how older women embraced aging with grace. They didn’t resist it, they wore their years with peace. 🌷

On both my trips to Africa, first as a teen, then as an adult, I felt something shift in me. I felt beautiful, not because of how I looked but because of how accepted I felt. I didn’t feel the need to impress or pretend. I could simply be.

Coming home, standing in front of the giant mirror in my bathroom, I suddenly thought: “Why am I so quick to criticise myself? Who am I trying to please, others or Christ?”

That question, which is rooted in Galatians 1:10, has stayed with me ever since:

This thought often leads me to another verse from Proverbs 31:30 which says, “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Looking back, I’m actually grateful for what seemed to be a “the lack of mirrors” in Africa. With no constant reflection to critique, I stopped inventing flaws. I wasn’t watching myself. I was living; engaging with others, listening, loving and laughing.

If you’ve ever wrestled with comparison, I hope this post encourages you. Please remember: you are fearfully and wonderfully made. 💗

And if you need a practical push, maybe try covering or even removing your mirrors for a few days. It sounds small but it might help you look inward rather than outward, and reflect on the kind of beauty that lasts.

Soon, I’ll be sharing some of the quotes that have helped shape my own journey toward becoming less vain and more grounded, growing freer from the comparison trap. 🌱

Many Blessings, Grace. Xx

  1. This is truly inspiring. As an African woman I can attest to that confidence especially older women have. As younger women, we still need to embrace who God has created us to be. Lovely piece.

    Best Regards…

    1. Amen, it personally has been a journey for me! But I am so grateful for the woman in my life who have witness such godly confidence as they age. 🥹

    2. I’m glad you liked my post, else I’d probably never met your beautiful pieces. True beauty is found in knowing Christ! ✨Not I who lives, but Christ who lives in me.🙌🏽

      1. Amen! Thanks for reading my blog too! Xx

  2. Great article. As a teacher of Christian evidences, I come at Psalm 139:13-14 from an evidences viewpoint, the amazing design of all the human body systems and how they function together (irreducible complexity they call it) as proof of the existence of God. You come at it from a personal identity that God gives each person regardless of their external appearance, which for most people is much more needed! It is good to have both! Keep it up.

    2. Amen! He has fearfully and wonderfully made us… regardless of whether or not we fit societies mold/defintion of beauty. 🥰

  3. Beautiful. Thank you.

  4. yes!!! My recent week spent away from humans alone in the bush grounded me more in Christ Jesus and in my true identity. No longer separating body soul and spirit- which is a toxic thing to do, but embracing all of me. It was only Friday morning my last day in the forest that I was singing praises to God out of psalm 139 – the verses you quote Grace.

    1. How beautiful! 💙

      1. Yes, God is so good. Bless you too.

  6. Grâce. You’ve captured the African woman! We lived in Uganda for a year and your description of their stature and confidence is so accurate. Good comparison.

    1. Amen, thank you! 🫶🏽

  7. This is the transparency that so many need to both hear and see.. we are overcome by our testimonies and by The Blood of The Lamb!!! Keep going Sis, there is purpose in your PRAISE✝️✨️💨

    1. Aw, thank you so much for your encouragement! 🥰

  8. Thank you for the post. Once again a gentle breeze for our souls… a reminder of the innate beauty the Father created in the soul of every person…all special, unique, and infinitely valuable to Him.

    1. Of course! 💙

  10. Men don’t look at mirror a lot, but they compare themselves with other men. Just the same guys need to find their beauty (manliness) in Christ Jesus! He is the MAN. At a command, “Follow Me, ” – the crude rough fishermen dropped their nets and followed Him.

    1. Amen, I totally agree!

  11. Men don’t often look into the mirrors. However, they do secretly compare themselves to other men. Men also need to find their beauty (significance) in Christ. He is the Man—at His command, those crude, rugged fishermen dropped their nets to follow Him. Thanks for your sharing. Grace.

    1. Amen, I totally agree!

  12. Totally love this Grace! God Bless!

    1. Thanks girl! Many blessings to you! Xx

  13. We are created in God’s image, marred by sin, saved by grace, through faith in Christ, and one day we will be to our Savior’s likeness. Praise the Lord! Great writing, and thank you so much for sharing!!

    1. Of course, thank you for your encouraging words! 🥰

  14. Well said, with being made in God’s image nothing about our exterior is ever good enough, but what is inside that can be seen on the outside and claimed as God is never ugly, “in a spiritual sense,” Thanks for the like.

    1. Yes, what’s on the inside matters most but I do believe God has given each one of us something that is externally beautiful too. 🤍

  15. Thank you kindly, for the like of my post. Yes, True beauty is from within, revealed from the power of Spirit of the Greater one who lives within.

    1. Amen! Thanks for reading. Xx

  16. As a guy, I find this kind of woman attractive: She fears the Lord in the deepest of her heart, and with a gentle and quiet spirit, which is imperishable and precious in God’s eyes. Thanks for keeping the “likes” of my journals; I’m glad that I can share with you.

  17. Great post! I’m African and I live in the US. I’m a witness. In Africa signs of aging in my body are considered indications of wisdom. Out in the US, I’m virtually invisible since I’m no longer young and beautiful!!

    1. Aw, bless! You are always beautiful in our father’s eyes and that’s all that matters. 🤍

  18. Wonderful thoughts on beauty.

    1. Thank you! 💜

  21. I agree wholeheartedly. My wife and I are growing older together, and it’s not the outward appearance which keeps us enjoying each other’s company. You’re also right about comparing ourselves with others…

“For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” 2 Corinthians 10:12

    1. Amen, thank you for sharing that scripture! 😊

  22. Well told. You are so fortunate to learn to love yourself at your young age. I’m old and I marvel that it took me way too long to become comfortable going to town without gussying up, like shaving. Then one day I realized how little it really meant to others that saw me. It meant no more to them than their appearance meant to me. I’m wiser now and actually feel relieved with this newfound ease. I guess I learned a little later in life, because I had lived in a world where appearance was important. Whew, relief.

  23. I liked this post and wanted to hear more about that experience and your observations about beauty. The trip sounds great.

  24. Beautiful and encouraging words! Love your experience in Africa.

    1. Yes, it was so fun! Xx

  25. I too have been to Africa, twice in poor rural areas. We can gain so much from experiences in other cultures and yet we all worship the one God. Thanks for sharing

    1. Amen! Thank you for sharing your experience with me too. 💜
