The Lies We Believe About Ourselves

We all carry them.
Lies whispered to us in childhood.
Lies picked up from the culture around us.
From broken people.
Broken systems.
Hard moments.
And disappointments.

Lies that masqueraded truth for far too long.
Some of these lies are loud.
Some are subtle.
Some are passed down.
Some are formed quietly over the course of our lives.
And many,
we don’t even realise are lies.

They feel like wisdom.
Like protection.
Like the only way to move through this world without getting hurt again.

We don’t usually recognise the lies until we begin to heal.

Here are some lies that might sound familiar:
“I’m too much… or not enough.”
“If I’m quiet and agreeable, people will love me.”
“If I’m perfect, I’ll be safe.”
“If I reject others first, I won’t feel rejected.”
“I have to earn rest.”
“I’m broken beyond repair.”
“I have to do this alone.”
“If they really knew me, they’d leave.”
“My needs don’t matter.”
“I’m a burden if I ask for help.”
“Everyone else has it together except me.”
“I have to stay strong for everyone.”
“My emotions make me weak.”
“I’m falling behind in life.”
“If I let myself rest, everything will fall apart.”
“I’m replaceable.”
“My worth comes from what I do, not who I am.”
“I should be further along by now.”

The list goes on and on…

But the truth is, these lies never announced themselves.
They slip in quietly, often dressed up as logic or self-protection.
Their roots grew over time, watered by experience, reinforced by what others did or didn’t say.

And before we knew it, we were living through the filter of many lies we never intended to believe.

But here’s the good news:
Lies can be unlearned.
Truth can be relearned.
And healing always begins with awareness, and the desire to change.

Many Blessings, Grace. Xx

  1. Great insight and wisdom Grace. It can take many years to learn this.

  2. Your post is very true.

  3. I identified with a few of those.
I love how, with God’s perspective, we can read those lies and recognize them as such. And then we can ask Him to reveal His truths to us, and overcome those lies.
The Truth sets us free, indeed.
    Thank you.

    1. Amen! The truth really does set us free. Xx

  4. Many of the hardest battles we face don’t begin “out there”—they begin in the quiet narratives we accept as true and we all know that lies rarely arrive with warning; they often come dressed as common sense, self-protection, or “just being realistic.” And once they settle in, they don’t merely affect how we feel—they shape how we interpret everything: relationships, setbacks, even our view of God.

What stands out to me is the hope woven into your closing thought: lies can be unlearned, and truth can be relearned. That fits so well with the biblical picture of renewal—“be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). As we bring these thoughts to the Lord and measure them against His Word, the fog starts to lift. The goal isn’t self-condemnation for having believed wrong things, but honest examination and a steady return to what God says is true.

This functions like a mirror—and also like a doorway—inviting us to trade familiar falsehoods for the firm, freeing truth of Christ. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17).

    1. Amen! He really does make all things new… and has the power to set us free! 🩷

  5. This is such a universal struggle… I try hard to teach this to my daughters. My prayer is that I am able to instill in them, a wisdom to know the difference. I call my intrusive lying distortions – a tool satan uses to draw my mind away from peace the truth gives me. Healing comes when we learn our true worth and find identity in who God says we are.

  6. Some of the lies you’ve listed slide so subtly into our lives we don’t even question their accuracy. Praise God for his Word and the wisdom of godly saints to direct us to HIS truth. Thank you, Grace, for doing so here!

    1. Amen! Thank you for reading. 🥰
