Thank God It Wasn’t Him: The Wrong Relationships

Thank God it wasn’t him.

Thank God it wasn’t the man who was adamant he would marry me while I was still a teen.

the man who had already decided how many children I’d have by the age of 23…

Or the guy who couldn’t decide whether or not he actually liked me,

the one who ruined Christmas,

or the one who would yell at me and call it a “test.”

And beyond that, thank God it wasn’t the man who claimed he was single, only for me to discover he was already married with multiple children.

…And while many of these closed doors initially left me confused, questioning myself… and even grieving something I thought could have been, I can now truly say that every “no” has become a massive THANK YOU.

Because there have been so many times I’ve looked back and wondered:

What if I’d settled because I was tired of waiting?

What if I’d mistaken attention for love?

Or chemistry for character?

Or potential for maturity?

And whilst the list of “Thank God it wasn’t him” is already a mile long, I find myself grateful for it…

Because not every almost is meant to become an always,

and not every closed door is a loss…

But for now, I carry a hope that one day I’ll have an even longer list that says:

Thank God it IS him.

And until then, I’ll keep thanking God for every door I thought I wanted opened, because He knew better than to let me walk through it.

…So, if you’re in a season of asking God, “Why?”

I hope this reminds you that He already knows the why.

You just have to trust Him.

Because sometimes, years later, you look back at the door that once slammed in your face, (even the ones you once cried over) and realise… THANK GOD it was not him. 🥹

Many Blessings, Grace. Xx

  1. Hey sis, great word!! I know it will help and bless (and protect!) many people.

That said, I’m so sorry you went through this pain… and so glad you are grateful for the closed door! Many today would rather have an open door–which leads to badness and perhaps madness–than a door closed today (closed to the same badness) and an open door or window (leading to YAY instead of “hey…!”) just coz the latter might take longer to arrive at.

Praying for you always, sweet sister! May our + LORD + Continue To Bless you–and Bless *through* you. :))

I have lived with three men and have learned so much. As I was thinking of writing my thoughts, here is your post, which adds the reason to encourage those whose feelings are shattered by doors being closed. I hope you don’t mind me quoting a part of this post.
    Have yourself a blessed day!

  8. Wise words, Grace, that all young Christians in particular need to understand, as disappointments are bound to enter their lives. It greatly helps to alleviate the pain when we remember God has someone/something better in mind. Perhaps you’ve heard this statement also: “One thing worse than not getting married is being married to the wrong person.” I’ve lived long enough to witness in the lives of others the strong truth of that statement.

    1. Amen. Thank you for reading. 🧡

  9. Thanks so much!

  10. Thank you Grace. This spoke to me EVERYTHING I needed to hear. Praise God! I look forward to having that longer list as well 🥹 God bless you!!
