Rejecting Others Before They Reject Me

I believed a lie.
I didn’t know it was a lie at the time.
It felt like wisdom.
Like protection.
Like the only way I could move through life without constantly getting hurt.

The lie sounded like this;
“If you reject others before they decide to reject you, it won’t hurt as much.”

So, I lived that way…
Guarded.
Distant.
With walls carefully built and then reinforced too.

I learned how to emotionally detach before others had the chance to disappoint me.
I’d pull away quietly, sometimes subtly, sometimes not subtle at all.
I’d use being “too busy” as a shield, creating distance to make sure they wouldn’t be the one to leave first.

It was never out of malice.
It was always, out of fear.

Fear of abandonment.
Fear of being “too much” or somehow still “not enough.”
Fear of repeating old wounds, old endings, old heartbreaks.
Fear of being hurt again.

And for a while, I told myself it was working.
After all, I was protecting my heart… right?

But here’s the truth I learned the hard way:
self-protection doesn’t selectively numb pain.

Eventually, it became clear,
rejecting people first didn’t save me from pain.
It just gave me a different kind of pain.

A lonely one.
An empty one.
A self-inflicted ache.

It cost me the possibility of healing.
The beauty of walking in relationships marked by hope, peace and trust.

I realised I was hurting myself before anyone else even had the chance to…
just so I could stay in control of when the hurt came.

And I had to ask myself something;
What if I allowed people to potentially hurt me again…
and what if they didn’t?

Because yes, people will disappoint us.
Some will leave.
Some won’t know how to love.
And others will mishandle our hearts entirely.

But some people will stay.
Some will show up.
Some will choose us… and keep choosing us.

And I don’t want to miss the beauty of this love
because I’m too busy running from all the negative “what ifs.”

So, no… rejecting others first doesn’t make the pain disappear.
It distorts it.
Deepens it.
Complicates it.

And now here I am, still learning to fight the instinct to run,
knowing that love is never found by hiding.

Many Blessings, Grace. Xx

  1. This is so relatable! Thanks for sharing so vulnerably!

    1. Of course! Thank you so much for reading. 🩵

  2. We develop so many ways to try to control others, or our circumstances, or ourselves. We live some sad lives before we surrender to God. So much done in ignorance or in hurt.
I love how God guides and heals.

    1. That’s so true.
Thank God for His new mercies and His way of healing us. 🥹

  3. We just never know, and the unknown is what’s scary sometimes. When I lived in another state, I met a woman who really intimidated me. We were both involved on the same committee, so it wasn’t like I could avoid being around her. I ALWAYS felt as though she didn’t like me. Wouldn’t you know, when I moved — she was the ONLY one who reached out to me to see how I was doing. She called, and sometimes would send text messages with sincere concern. It made me realize that the problem wasn’t HER, it was ME!

    1. Oh my goodness! …So good that you can now see what the root of the problem was though. Many blessings to you. 🫶

Being rejected hurts. The natural response is to put up barriers and defend ourselves from being hurt by others, but as we do we can miss so many opportunities to love and be loved.
Thank you for being so vulnerable… it is refreshing to read someone who is.

  11. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.

    1. This quote sums up everything so perfectly! 🔥

  12. This is so profound, Grace. I know a few people who do this. A message I would like to share.

    1. Yes, many people do. Unfortunately though telling someone they do this generally won’t help or reveal anything… until the Lord does himself. 🥰

  13. God dropped you off on this corner of this block, to give you the opportunity to cross the street, and become something more.
“I see you“, I see into the magical essence you are, and I am captivated by the beauty you think you are not.
So march on, brave one. <3

    1. Thank you. And thank you so much for reading. 🫶🏾
