Sometimes, it takes seeing the world through someone else’s eyes to truly appreciate the simple things we often take for granted.
Since I started working with people with all types of disabilities a few years ago, my perspective has shifted in ways I didn’t expect. Many days, I get to witness incredible strength, courage, resilience and an unexplainable joy as many of my clients choose contentment despite challenges.
It’s made me realize just how many blessings I have in my own life…
I get to walk.
I get to move freely without immense pain or struggle.
I get to work and provide for myself.
I can clean my own home.
I can drive a car.
I get to shower without help.
I get to dress myself.
I can present myself to the world however I want.
These may seem like basic, everyday things that most of us barely think about. But for many people I work with, these simple acts require effort, adaptation and help from others.
Seeing this on a weekly basis often makes me stop and reflect: how often do I rush through my own daily rituals without appreciating the gift they really are? How often do I complain about minor inconveniences when someone else would give anything for a single moment of independence?
Working alongside people with disabilities has taught me the power of gratitude, in the small things. It’s a reminder that freedom and autonomy are precious. And gratitude isn’t just a feeling… it’s a choice. A choice to recognize the privileges I do have, no matter how seemingly small.
So today, I’m choosing gratitude.
For my body, my abilities, my independence and for the people who remind me daily what strength really looks like.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated or sad, maybe pause and ask yourself: what’s one thing I get to do daily that I might usually take for granted?
Because gratitude really has nothing to do with changing your life or circumstances, it’s about noticing the beauty in the so-called mundane life you already have.
Many blessings, Grace. Xx
