Everyday Blessings I Almost Took for Granted

Sometimes, it takes seeing the world through someone else’s eyes to truly appreciate the simple things we often take for granted.

Since I started working with people with all types of disabilities a few years ago, my perspective has shifted in ways I didn’t expect.  Many days, I get to witness incredible strength, courage, resilience and an unexplainable joy as many of my clients choose contentment despite challenges.

It’s made me realize just how many blessings I have in my own life…

I get to walk.
I get to move freely without immense pain or struggle.
I get to work and provide for myself.
I can clean my own home.
I can drive a car.
I get to shower without help.
I get to dress myself.
I can present myself to the world however I want.

These may seem like basic, everyday things that most of us barely think about.  But for many people I work with, these simple acts require effort, adaptation and help from others.

Seeing this on a weekly basis often makes me stop and reflect: how often do I rush through my own daily rituals without appreciating the gift they really are?  How often do I complain about minor inconveniences when someone else would give anything for a single moment of independence?

Working alongside people with disabilities has taught me the power of gratitude, in the small things.  It’s a reminder that freedom and autonomy are precious.  And gratitude isn’t just a feeling… it’s a choice.  A choice to recognize the privileges I do have, no matter how seemingly small.

So today, I’m choosing gratitude.

For my body, my abilities, my independence and for the people who remind me daily what strength really looks like.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated or sad, maybe pause and ask yourself: what’s one thing I get to do daily that I might usually take for granted?

Because gratitude really has nothing to do with changing your life or circumstances, it’s about noticing the beauty in the so-called mundane life you already have.

Many blessings, Grace. Xx

  5. And, sometimes ‘mundane’ is a blessing in itself. 😊
    Thank you for blessed reminders.

    1. Of course! Thank you for reading. Xx

  6. SO TRUE. My wife has a special needs brother (age 70) and I just take for granted all the things that I can do physically that he has never been able to do (like run, play sports, drive, etc. He has been a blessing to his family in spite of his disability.

    1. Amen! It’s good to sit back and reflect on our blessings sometimes. 🤍

  7. Reminds me of Ray Vander Laan talking about how upon following their Rabbi, some disciples heard him give a prayer of thanks for the holes in our bodies before he used the bathroom.

When they asked the Rabbi why he prayed like that, he told them how grateful they should be, because if any of those holes didn’t work, then they’d understand how fortunate we are to have them.

God’s mercy is a physical truth in so many ways 🥰🩷

  8. This is powerful lesson and I have a hearing disability at the moment. This is the very reason why I try twice as hard to listen carefully when a person is talking to me.

I now use a Hearing Aid on my right earlobe. But I may also have to raise enough money to purchase a “behind the ear” Hearing Aid for my right earlobe just to balance my Hearing frequency or the range of my Hearing Aid so that I can hear and respond positively as well as clearly to the person who is speaking to me.

Thank you so much for sharing your valuable insights and I wish you the good Lord above many blessings for being able to see the world around us from the point of view of a Person With Disabilities (PwD).

  9. This is such a refreshing read.
Practicing Gratitude is so important cause it’s very easy to take these simple things for granted. But there are so many people that wish that they could even be commenting on blog posts like this.

    1. Anyone can comment on my blog posts. ☺️

  10. Truly a wonderful post. My mom has two strokes. I help her dress and shower and drive her everywhere, but in my busyness forgot what a blessing it is that I can do these things for myself.

  13. Hello Grace. It’s so good to stop and smell the roses. Why? Because when we do, our ears are opened, too. We often hear things that are unspeakable….like our heart beats, the wind, tears, joy and most of all the Holy Spirit. Your post touched my inner most being. You are beautiful and so is your family. My our Lo()rd and Savior continue to lead and guide you in all of your endeavors. (Conversations With God Using Scripture)

  15. The thread that separates a healthy person from an unhealthy person is extremely thin and fragile. Your health can be taken away in an instant, naturally or by accident. I have lived 84 years in relatively good health, and I am eternally grateful for that privilege. God has provided me with a good life.

    1. Amen! All glory to God for that and many blessings to you as you continue down this journey of life. 🙏

  16. I absolutely loved this read! It is easy to get caught up in our day-to-day woes that we forget to thank God for the blessing of autonomy, grace, and mercy. The fact that we can stand up and walk around is a gift from God. It’s vital to show gratitude and allow that to be your mental default.

    1. Amen, I definitely agree! Thank you so much for reading too. Xx

  17. Grace, this is such a powerful reminder to slow down and appreciate the everyday blessings we often overlook. Choosing gratitude truly changes how we see life.

    1. It really does! 🥹 Thank you so much for reading too.

      1. It is truly my pleasure, Grace! Have a pleasant Wednesday!

      2. Thank you! Xx

  18. This post is a blessing, especially with Thanksgiving right around the corner. I’ve found the holiday to be a tragic comedy. We sit around a table shoveling down turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. We talk about how thankful we are for our health and our families.

Then, when the clock strikes midnight, our tune changes. All the things we were just so thankful for become an afterthought as we anticipate new stuff that we think will make us bring us joy. In doing so, we miss the beautiful story that has been woven into our own story: we are thankful, and God makes us even more thankful by sending His Son.

The songs will play nonstop through malls and stores for over a month, yet the real gift—the true, life-giving, always-thankful joy of Christ is overlooked.

Thanks for reminding us to grateful.

    1. Wow, that’s actually such a sad but insightful realisation. May we all learn to fix our eyes on him more and more so that everything around us would become so dim. Many Blessings, Grace. 💙

  19. Thank you Grace. Sometimes, being disabled perhaps makes me appreciate more all the every day mundane tasks I am still able to do for myself. I am always grateful to God for the safe home he brought me to, and all He provides, especially financially after a time in my life where I lost almost everything, through no fault of my own. God Bless

    1. He is so faithful! Thank you for sharing a glimpse of your story with me. 🥹

  20. Thank you Grace, this is a wonderful reflection upon everyday life and how gratitude can transform our attitude towards what we already possess and take for granted.

    1. Amen! Thank you so much for reading. 🥰

  21. Yes, you said it beautifully. Choosing to stop and enjoy and be thankful for the seemingly little things, like warm water and sheets, or the ability to hear music, brings such joy and peace. They are gifts, but at the same time cause me to pray for those without them that GOD give them that which will bring them joy and peace.

    1. Amen! SO true, may we intercede on behalf of others as much as we express gratitude to our Heavenly Father for our own blessings. Xx Thank you so much for reading too!

  22. Your words are a powerful reminder not to take the everyday abilities we often overlook for granted. Gratitude hits differently when it’s rooted in real connection and real stories—exactly like the ones you’ve witnessed.
Thank you for sharing this. It’s grounding, humbling, and inspiring all at once.

    1. Amen! Thank you so much for reading. 💕

  23. Your words carry that quiet weight of truth, the kind that settles on the heart and humbles it. It reminds me of how the Psalmist prayed, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:2). We forget so easily, especially the blessings wrapped in routine.

What you’ve shared lifts the veil on how extraordinary the “ordinary” really is. The simple act of rising, dressing, moving, choosing—things many of us do without a second thought—are, to someone else, mountains climbed with courage every single day. And somehow, witnessing that kind of strength has a way of softening our frustrations and sharpening our gratitude.

Your reflection is a beautiful nudge to pause and cherish what we get to do, not just what we have to do. It’s amazing how thankfulness can turn the mundane into something sacred, and how choosing gratitude can shift the whole atmosphere of the heart. Thank you for sharing this perspective so tenderly. It’s a blessing in itself.

    1. Aww, I’m filled with gratitude hearing this! Thank you for taking the time to read my blog post and for leaving such a beautiful comment as you’ve shared your thoughts and your heart. Many Blessings, Grace. ❤️
